Hello, and welcome to Inside EHS, my name is Roxanne Summers. I am the Director of Student Services with the College of Education, Health & Society, often known as EHS. I have a short presentation here that will introduce you to all the many different programs and opportunities we offer. So hang tight, and let's take a look inside EHS.
Let's start with a look inside of you. What are you interested in? Is it in the field of education, health, or society? I've listed a variety of career paths that you can achieve through the programs we offer in EHS. So take a look at this list. If there's something inside you, that interests you, hang on, and I'll tell you all about the many different programs we offer.
Let's start with the field of education. You want to be a licensed teacher? Great! Our programs in teacher education prepares students for a license in primary, middle and adolescent, and foreign language education. Now, these licensure bands are always established by the Ohio Department of Education. We encourage students to get the Ohio licensure. The reciprocity for our license is excellent across the United States. So if you want to travel out of the state, or you live out of the state, and you want to have a license to teach, I do recommend that you look at that Department of Education website to see how they license. This department also offers minors in education, teaching and learning, and a certificate in fostering just communities.
Another area where you can get a license in the state of Ohio, is in our inclusive Special Education Program. This is a dual license mild, moderate, moderate, intense. Again, the reciprocity across the United States is excellent. But please check the Department of Education for the state you're interested to see how they license and what the reciprocity is for the Ohio license. This department offers minors in special education, note that it's non-licensure, disability studies and our certificate in autism spectrum disorder.
Now we do have a major called education studies that is non-licensure. See here it says non-licensure. So if you have an interest though, in the field of education, maybe you want to go into some nonprofit work, or maybe even want to go to law school and practice educational law. This might be the program for you. This doesn't take you into the comprehensive classroom, but it gives you the breadth and understanding of education from these five different track areas that you can choose from. This department offers a minor in community based leadership and a certificate in outdoor leadership.
Our health section of our name starts with our kinesiology, nutrition, and health department. You'll see that the three programs we offer here all focus in the health areas. And I'm going to encourage you to go out to our website and explore further what a kinesiology degree might lead to, for example of physical therapy, occupational therapy. A lot of our students go into those programs with a degree from kinesiology but there's so much more. Our nutrition program has two different tracks. You want to become a registered dietician, then you take the dietetics track, but it also has a community nutrition area. Our public health program focuses on promotion. And that is communication and education to the public. The other areas are offered in the College of Arts and Science. This department has a minor in nutrition.
Sports leadership and management. I actually have this under our society area. And if you're interested in concentration in coaching or sports management, this is the program you might want to check out. If you would like to go on and have a degree in sports journalism and media and communications. You can combine these two. You would be a double major and for the sports journalism media and communication, you would also be taking some courses through the College of Arts and Science. But we've mapped this up very doable. This department offers minors in coaching, sports management, and sport analytics with a certificate in sport analytics that is available.
We also have a program or a department called Family Science and Social Work. In this department we offer social work as our major. And as you can see here, it's an accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. What is really cool about this degree is our graduates are eligible to apply for the Social Work license. And for a Family Life Educators certification all within our social work major. We also have the opportunity to offer you to go on to get a Master's degree in social work that can be done at Miami as well. This department offers minors in family relationships, child studies, and youth development. And we have a certificate in child life specialists, which a lot of students are interested in getting that license as a child life specialist, so be sure and check that out on our website.
So what else is inside EHS? Well, yeah, we have internships and experiential learning. If you think about all the different majors we have, we pretty much have to do that in everything like student teaching in our education fields. So it's embedded pretty much in every one of our programs.
Undergraduate research, we have outstanding faculty who love to do research, and they love it when our undergraduate students show an interest in that as well. Study abroad, study away, of course. You can do any of that. Now study away usually refers to within the United States. Of course study abroad is usually outside of the United States. We have majors who do specific programs that are embedded into the major so you can check that out on our website and see our study abroad programs or you can go to our international study abroad website on Miami University.
Technology in teaching and learning. Well, Miami has something really unique here. And it's called a Teach Live lab. And this is where our educators have the opportunity to teach with avatars in preparation for the comprehensive classrooms. It's really cool and great experience. Our Engaging Technology Lab, the ETL, is there to support all of our students. They have some really cool tech stuff you can do there. And you know what, if you need a computer to borrow, they can do that for you too. We also offer four combined degrees that can be completed in five years, I will encourage you to go out to our website and check those out.
We also have an Institute for Community Justice and Well-being. We call it the ICJW. Held here is what we call the Urban Cohort, a Sexuality Education Center, and a Contemplative Mindfulness Center. So check those out when you're exploring our website as well.
Well, here you go. I kept telling you to look at our website and that's exactly what I want you to do for more information. While you're out there be sure and check out our EHS advisor contact list. These are the individuals that are called Chief Department Advisors for all of our departments. So if you have something very specific you want to chat with him about, shoot him an email or set up a zoom appointment and meet with them. As you look at our website, look for Visit EHS and explore. Here you're gonna see a multitude of videos about all the different programs that we offer. You're gonna see our faculty and our students working in EHS in their program areas.
And speaking of students, EHSAmbassadors are our students, and we call them EHSA. These are outstanding individuals who just love Miami and love EHS and want to talk to you about that. You can see some great videos of our students under Why Miami. Why did they select Miami, so check that out as well. They're also on social media. They have a Facebook and Instagram account as well.
Finally, EHS Live Virtual Events are all part of this Make it Miami program. So go out and search for our live Zoom events that we're setting up and register and you will have the opportunity to either meet with faculty, maybe a department advisor, and certainly our students so be sure and check all that out before you go. And finally, I'm Roxanne Summers, Director Student Services. Here's my email address, phone number, shoot me questions and what we do like to say here in EHS is you're family. So welcome to the family. Be sure and look further inside EHS. I look forward to hearing from you. Goodbye.
