Welcome to the overview of the Center for Career Exploration and Success. My name is Hannah Pig and I am a career advisor in the Career Center and liaison to the College of Arts and Science. The Career Center is dedicated to guiding undergraduate and graduate students in exploring career paths and opportunities. We serve all students and encourage students to begin engaging with our office in their first year at Miami, and stay engaged with us until they graduate. The Career Center even has an initiative called Success Starts with a Plan that outlines tasks for first year students and second year students to complete in order to kick off and engage in their personal career journey. Some of these tasks include creating a resume, completing your Handshake profile, attending Career Center events, and participating in interview services and resources.
The Career Center is proud of the continued outreach and impact we're able to have across campus. Our office has seen an increase in student engagement through drop-in appointments, classroom presentations, career advising appointments, and events with an increase of 32.3% for overall student touches in the 2018-2019 academic year.
This increase in student engagement has made our students successful in pursuing highly competitive careers, ready to be excellent leaders and innovators, and capable of landing their top choice of job or educational placement. The first destinations report shows the results of the Career Center, Miami University, and the students hard work by providing educational and career outcomes for alumni who graduated with a bachelor's or graduate degree during the previous academic year. Graduates who were employed, serving in the military, serving in a volunteer service program, or enrolled by December 31 are counted in the success rate. As you can see, the success rates of all five colleges at Miami University are 95% or higher, with most students working full-time or continuing their education.
One newer initiative in the Career Center is called the Career Cluster Model. Career clusters are groupings of common occupations that fall within our broad industry sectors. Career Clusters were designed because a major does not always lead directly to a career. But instead, majors can be paired with meaningful experiences in several areas to gain the transferable skills and knowledge necessary for a variety of career paths. Career Clusters allows students to customize their career path by narrowing down their professional interests while they explore similar careers within broad career categories. By choosing one or more Career Clusters, students will receive targeted information about events, jobs, internships, and employers related to their chosen clusters. Visit miamioh.edu/career-clusters for more information.
The Career Center offers a wide range of resources and services to help students explore, prepare, and get connected. To explore career paths, students can receive individualized career coaching, complete career assessments, and learn about graduate school options and our Career Clusters. The Career Center also offers two, four credit courses to help students engage with and explore careers. In addition, the Career Center helps prepare students for their future by offering assistance with job and internship searches, resumes and CVs, cover letters, professional networking, and interviewing through our one on one Career Advising and Career Center events.
Finally, students can get connected with their future careers by participating in job shadows, internships, networking, and career tracks offered through the Career Center. During the COVID-19 crisis, we will be offering virtual career advising and we can still be reached during our normal office hours of 8am - 5pm, Monday through Friday. Please visit our webpage at miamioh.edu/careers for more information. We look forward to seeing you in 0045 Armstrong Student Center when you're able to return to campus. Thank you for joining me today.
